Sponge Cake

Cake:

3/4 cup of sugar ,make fine powder

1 cup vegetable oil

3 eggs

Lemon zest-1tbsp

Lemon juice from 1/2 lemon

Vanilla essence-1tbsp

Baking powder-1/2 tsp

Salt-1/4tsp

All purpose flour-1 cup

Preheat to 375degree f.

Mix powdered sugar with oil. Add egg yolk to it and mix well. Beat egg white in separate  bowl and add to above mixture. Add lemon zest,lemon juice,vanilla essence ,salt to it then mix well. Add flour with baking powder to the mix and blend together gently. Pour to round 9 inch cake pan.Bake for 20-25min..

Swiz Chard

I got ne seed brand Swiz Chard from store. This is my first try at growing Swiss Chard and I am truly impressed. I planted them a bit early in the season still I've had consistently great seed germination rates. 

How to Sow and Plant

By April mid (3rd week) I made a nice raised bed to plant some others cool season crops- crops that grow well in cool weather and shade and this plant in a shady section of my back yard. The plant thrived in the cool shady area. When they did come up, it was with a vengeance. I tried growing them in rectangle containers also.

How to Grow

I watered it once a day and the water would last longer. I guess this plant is squirrel-proof. The plant thrived in the cool shady area and gave us large colorful-stemmed leaves.

The Leaves are large, and even the stems,when compared to planting in containers, still they are tender and delicious.

Harvesting

The flavor is similar but without the iron taste of spinach. Even the stalks are tender with no toughness or stringiness at all. So far, June 9 2014, there is no sign of bolting or any toughening of the leaves and stalks. Since we eat almost every kind of green available, I love spinach, salad leaves, beet leaves, and the rest, but from now on, Swiss Chard will be in the list.

The two main stems of the plant is full of fruits, i am afraid it will kill itself under the weight of fruits that barely ripened. The fruits were very slow growing and even slower to ripen.

Harvesting
It produces an abundance of fruit over a long season. I've never had an insect problem. Good size fruit, Very Red, Pretty Shape, Wonderful Sweet flavor.

How to Sow and Plant

I Planted this indoor in seedling tray this year mid April where they'd get afternoon sun through window. They shot up in a weeks time, all seeds germinated. 

How to Grow

The outdoor temperature shot up now to 70F High /42F Low. I planted them about 6 inches apart on either side, sprinkling water every morning and evening. I have the best luck growing on fence.

By the time they grew into two vines about three inches high I planted them outdoor.These are wonderful. We had frost to 35F, but they came though just fine.

Harvesting 

Not too long afterward I had beautiful tall stalks climbing up on the fence. Now we are rewarded with thick long vines. I picked handfull of these daily. Very sweet, not stringy, firm. The pods are sweet and are excellent in salads and as a snack.

This is my third year growing kale,its  an easier veggie to grow. I would say I had about a 95 germination rate. This kale is a very successful producer, with gray flavor!

I germinated them  in a rectangle container, and in 2 weeks time its sprouted.

It's May now and my plants are beautiful, strong and healthy. The color is beautiful, more tender and mild in flavor good for salads.

Beetroot Leaf Curry Recipe

This simple recipe will help you make the most of your fresh beets!

Serves - 2
Prep time: 10 mins
Cook time: 15 mins

Ingredients:
2 tbsp Coconut Oil
2 Shallots thinly sliced
1 tsp Mustard
1 Sprig Curry leaves
2 dry Red dry chilies 
1 cup grated Coconut
½ tsp Turmeric powder
1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
2 Garlic Clove finely chopped
½ tbsp Red Chili powder
1 plate fresh Beetroot leaves, chopped
Salt as required

Process:

1) Grind together grated Coconut, Turmeric, Cumin seeds, Garlic, Red Chili powder into coarse form. Keep it aside.

2) In a pan, heat coconut oil. Add the Mustard seeds, wait till they crackle.

3) Add shallots, curry leaves, Red dry Chili. Mix for a couple of minutes till the onions turn brown. 

4) Add the coconut mixture and mix few minutes. Add salt as needed.

5) Add the chopped Beetroot leaves, mix till the leaves are soft and oil leaves the sides of the mixture. 

6) Serve Hot with Rice and Yogurt.

Bonnie Crookneck Heirloom Squash

Product Details
I got this plant from Bonnie and I loved it. This season (spring 2016) i planted them on May first week. I planted them in 8 Gallon Container. These Squash plants are easy to grow and easy to care.

How to Plant
They run on warmth, plant in late spring or early summer. They need sunny spots, at least 6 to 8 hours of sun to bring out their best flavors. Water regularly, feel the soil if needed  more in the summer time.

They are almost 3 foot tall now. Better to use some support. The plants are open with large leaves and very easy to pick. The only problem I have encountered is due to a lack of pollinators, resulting in the squashes rotting once they reach 2-3 inches in length. Lots of flowers but few of them formed fruit. What I do get is good though. There is mildew issue.

Harvesting

They are perfect for grilling. This is our favorite summer squash, bearing many lemon-yellow, 6-inch fruit, with a slightly bent neck that earns it the name Crookneck. Harvest while skins are soft. Keep plants picked so they keep producing. The flavor of this squash is superior to any I've had - mild but tasty. Plants produce well and squash are easy to harvest.
